We did it! We had been planning since January to go to the Northwest Tandem Rally.
We actually had a whole training plan worked out that due to illness
and life getting in the way, we never actually really adhered to.
This meant that we had a total of 30 miles under our belt and no
training on the hills. Not that the ride was really all that
hilly (they called it the Flat Long after all) nor really that far (it
only turned out to be a wee over 60 miles)

but
we weren't necessarily prepared. Regardless, we did very well,
keeping a pretty darn good average speed and even... (more)

Ever notice the water bottles page on the Bike Friday Store is blank? There's actually a reason for that: we're not sure what we're going to have.

See, we've been getting custom ones made by Specialized and we've been experimenting. We've had quite a 16 different styles in the past 10 months (about 100 of each no less!). It's gotten to the point that we've decided to make a gallery of them in the showroom so we don't forget which combinations we liked and didn't like.

I will say those bottles live up to the hype, though. They don't leak a bit and they don't mold up and stink.... (more)

Here's a call for photos. I'm always scouring the internet for halfway relevant pictures to post but it sure woudl be nice to have some good looking Friday pics. I love this one. Anyways, I would suggest posting them on Flickr with the bikefriday tag and I'll make sure to look there first. I would suggest focusing less on taking portraits and capturing history and more on being creative. I'm anxious to see what people will come up with.

gotta.. have.. mountain bike.

I can't stand it anymore, especially given that Steve and Chris (who is, sadly, no longer with us) have been talking for what seems aeons about riding the Cascade Cream Puff. Not like I'm in any way shape or form ready to join them, but it reminds me how much I love mountain biking.

In fact, I like it a lot like I like riding a fixed gear. There's something innocent and visceral about it. Getting wet and muddy at the beginning of the ride.. just to get it out of the way. Hammering up a climb, your every muscle straining, while the wind quietly weaves it way through the silent trees. A... (more)

The Washington Post had an article about a low-budget reporter with an intense bike lust who decided to try a fixed gear conversion to see if it might satisfy his need for a newish budget bike. He definately had a few mishaps along the way, which is not uncommon for the inexperienced. This is one of the reasons there are a few "fixed gear consultants" out there. Inevitably, you'll save money in the end going that way, just like you could get the BF headset and then put the King headset on later, but you might as well just get the Chris King headset from the beginning

Speaking of fixed... (more)

Figured I'd come back with a bang.

Anyways, one of Bike Friday's best customers and a close personal friend, Al Gilens, took it upon himself to represent us at Round Up, the annual folder festival our Philly dealer, Trophy Bikes, puts on. (aside: needless to say, he snagged quite a few referrals for his time, hint hint, nudge nudge)

It impressed one reporter enough that he pretty much described folders as the future of transportation. In this article, (which is where the title of this entry comes from, by the way!) one learns the previous careers of the major folding bike designers. ... (more)

As I said earlier, I've been working hard. Well outside of the cross-training I've been doing, I have been working my butt off at work. The main reason for this is because I've been taking on more responsibility. The production line has long needed someone to help provide them resources and support, further the flow of information between it and other departments, and otherwise organize the chaotic flow that is mass customization. Slowly but surely I've been taking on these tasks more and more. The current plan does not include removing me from the sales team, but at some... (more)

I know, I broke my promise of having an entry every Monday. I have a good excuse though: I've been working my butt off. And I don't mean just at work. I'll get to that piece later. Nope, I've been doing some cross training. My wife joined a local gym to help get her in good shape. She's been really reaping the benefits and getting a lot of good info on training and nutrition and has been trying to get the message through to me that I need to do something other than just ride. Then I saw Oregon Cycling's recent mention of a Wall Street Journal article on research suggesting that doing... (more)

The show was a success! We exposed ourselves to cyclists and non-cyclists, locals and visitors, young and old alike. We were an interesting contrast to the biodiesel guys across from us for attendants and exhibitors alike. From the Sustainable Energy in Motion Bike Tour folks to a salesman from Stahlbush Island Farms, many expressed a desire to get themselves in a saddle of a Bike Friday.Speaking of which, now is the time to get yourself in two or three of them. As if an excuse is needed to buy a tandem bike, this is a perfect time to order one to pick up so that you can take it a... (more)
