winter mileage

Now that the rain and snow and cold is on its way, it seems a lot of people are asking about trainers. Here is the official list of trainers I know that work with a Bike Friday:

-CycleOps: what Lance rides (needs adapter)
-Kurt Kinetic: like a CycleOps (needs adapter)
-Redline 20/24: save tires with rim drive
-1up USA: machinist artwork

These are all meant to work with a quick release rear hub, so if you've got an internal hub, you're going to need to disconnect the shift mechanism for the internal (i.e. remove the cable box and the chain or pin). If you have the old Sachs/SRAM 3x7 and you can find an older CycleOps (don't know which vintage, so it won't help to ask!), you can switch the left and right sides to make it work. The left side has a slot for the quick release that can be used as a slot for the chain.

On the other hand, Cyclelicious had a nice post on riding in the winter that gave a few select reasons for riding outside in the winter, including "listening to your [...] buddies complain about how boring riding the trainer is all winter."

And this is why millions of people every year get out their fixed gears for winter riding. Even those white bike sort of roadies do it! Steve Pells tells how it's done for the uninitiated.

If you need a fixie for YOUR winter riding, let me know.

And speaking of buying things, we DO NOT sell any of the aforementioned trainers, though we could special order them for you.

However you do it, keep on riding!
